1. What is Memphis Youth Poet Laureate (MYPL)? Memphis Youth Poet Laureate is a youth poet who uses their voice or pen in advocacy of their communities and community members.

2. What are the requirements to apply ?The MYPL program is open to any Memphis and MidSouth Youth ages 13-19. A completed application form, a portfolio of original poems (up to 5), and a CV or resume detailing accomplishments, community services and accolades.

3. Where can I go to get support with building my portfolio and creating a CV? Schedule a virtual Poetry Lab by emailing 901homegrown@gmail.com.

4. When and where can I apply?Applications are available online now until March 8, 2025.

Memphis Youth Poet Laureate Program

Homegrown Arts is the proud host of the Youth Poet Laureate Program for Memphis, TN in partnership with Urban Word. Thank you to Memphis Public Libraries and Friends of the Library for their sponsorship!

The Memphis Youth Poet Laureate program encourages youth voice by identifying young writers who are committed to social change, community engagement, civic pride, and tolerance. Winners of this prestigious title will complete a 1 year residency with public speaking engagements, civic engagement service opportunities, and a creative project (of the title holders choosing). This program is open to all high school students.

The deadline to apply for the 2025 Memphis Youth Poet is March 8, 2025. MYPL Application is now closed.
